Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Canary Islands Special Zone (ZEC) and what tax advantages does it offer?
The ZEC is a low-taxation regime authorised by the European Union within the Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF). ZEC entities are taxed at 4% in Corporate Income Tax (compared with the general 25%), provided they meet requirements for investment, job creation and activity in the islands. At JAIZME we study your case and handle the incorporation and ongoing maintenance of the ZEC company.
Who is required to file Form 720 (Modelo 720)?
Spanish tax residents who hold assets or rights abroad worth more than €50,000 in any of the three blocks — bank accounts, securities and insurance, or real estate — are required to file. Since 2024, Form 721 (Modelo 721) also covers cryptocurrencies held in custody abroad. We help you determine your obligation and file it correctly.
What is IGIC and how does it differ from VAT?
IGIC (the Canary Islands General Indirect Tax) is the indirect tax specific to the Canary Islands, equivalent to mainland VAT but with lower rates: the general rate is 7%, compared with 21% for VAT. It is part of the Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) and gives Canarian businesses a competitive advantage.
How are inheritances and gifts taxed in the Canary Islands?
The Canary Islands apply significant reductions in Inheritance and Gift Tax for direct relatives (groups I and II), which can considerably lower the amount payable. Advance planning is key to optimising the transfer of a business. At JAIZME we manage the entire succession process and advise on the transfer of company shares and business assets.
Do you assist companies and investors that are not resident in Spain?
Yes. We manage Non-Resident Income Tax (IRNR) for foreign investors and companies, as well as the taxation of non-residents with business interests in the Canary Islands. We provide service in both Spanish and English.
What artificial intelligence services do you offer to businesses?
We help Canarian companies integrate AI into their day-to-day operations: process automation with n8n, chatbots and virtual assistants, custom GPTs, and intelligent avatars for customer service and presentations. We combine traditional advisory services with cutting-edge technology.
