Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF)?

The Canary Islands Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) is a set of tax incentives specific to the archipelago —RIC, ZEC, the Canary Islands investment deduction and reduced IGIC, among others— designed to offset its remoteness and boost investment and employment. It allows companies and self-employed professionals in the Canary Islands to be taxed considerably more favourably than in the rest of Spain.

What is the RIC and how much can it reduce?

The Reserve for Investments in the Canary Islands (RIC) allows you to reduce the Corporate Income Tax base by up to 90% of undistributed profits, provided that amount is allocated to a reserve and reinvested in the Canary Islands in the assets and within the timeframes set out by law.

What is the difference between the RIC and the ZEC?

The RIC is a reduction of the taxable base for reinvesting profits in the Canary Islands; the ZEC is a reduced Corporate Income Tax rate of 4% for entities registered in the Canary Islands Special Zone. They are different REF incentives that, in certain cases, can be combined to optimise taxation.

Who can benefit from the REF incentives?

Companies and self-employed professionals with genuine economic activity in the Canary Islands that meet the requirements of each incentive (investment amounts, asset retention, job creation or maintenance, etc.). At JAIZME we analyse your case to apply the most advantageous and secure combination of incentives.
